Granite Tiles and Counter Tops

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you have to know how popular granite is right now. I’m talking specifically about granite tile for floors and granite counter tops. One reason for granite’s popularity is its extreme durability and easy maintenance. Of course, it is also considered to be very stylish. Granite counter tops and tiles are showing up on television and in home magazines. If you want to get the look of granite into your kitchen, you need to find out more about finding the right look, getting in installed and taking care of it.

As popular as granite is, some people have actually encountered a problem with granite being too absorbent. Foods and liquids with lots of color (think red wine and beets) can leave a stain on granite if they aren’t cleaned up right away. Even if granite does get stained, it’s not the end of the world. There are cleaning solutions available that work well. There are also some treatments you can buy that you use before preparing food on your granite counter top that will provide extra protection against stains.

If you want to use granite tile for flooring, you must have a sturdy subfloor that can handle granite’s very heavy weight. Like most tiles, you are limited only by your imagination when it comes to flooring design. You can even work in different colors of granite to make the floor design more interesting. Here’s a tip though: be sure to use plastic spacers to accurately place your tiles. A beautifully designed and well-installed granite tile floor will become a real conversation topic among your guests.

Granite tile puts your kitchen design on an entirely new level and goes well with practically any décor. Your best choice for color is to stick with mid range tones; avoid extra light or extra dark tiles. And always take home some samples to try with your furniture before buying a room’s worth of tile.
